EMERGENCY WHISTLE: A VITAL ITEM

A whistle is a must in any emergency kit. You should always be carrying one with you during outdoor activities like hiking or camping. In an emergency situation, it can get you help faster than technology. You can signal people up to one mile around you (depending on your physical environment and weather conditions).

A whistle blast is much louder than a human scream, and using it will save your voice, your energy and, in case of cold weather, your body heat.

Make sure every member of your family is carrying a whistle, attached to their backpack strap or around their neck (with a safety lanyard that will break-away if caught on something). In an emergency situation or on a hike, you or your loved ones will be able to call for help immediately.

Three strong blows of the whistle are known as an international distress call and will be recognized by rescue teams or experienced hikers. People around you will know that something is wrong.

How to select an emergency whistle:

Most emergency whistles are made of plastic or metal. If you buy a metal one, make sure you choose a good quality model that won’t rust. Plastic ones are light and can easily be found in bright colors. In cold or freezing temperatures, plastic is less likely to freeze on your lips.

Choose a whistle without a “pea,” (which is a small ball that makes the sound vibrate). Pea whistles are more prone to freezing in cold environments or failing when wet.
